Turkey's economy minister said on Thursday that Turkey and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) could sign various agreements with the fund from now on.
Zafer Caglayan said Turkey would not only sign monetary agreements with the IMF in coming days, but it could sign various agreements with the fund. "I would like to say that IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde has told me that 'Turkey does not need IMF, but the IMF needs a strong country like Turkey'," Caglayan told reporters in Istanbul. Caglayan's remarks came after he met Lagarde, World Bank Managing Director Sri Mulyani Indrawati and CEOs of international companies in Istanbul.
The economy minister said whatever the World Bank, IMF and CEOs had told him would not spoil Turkey as they were only giving signals about how important steps Turkey had taken were and that Turkey should maintain the same course. Caglayan said Turkey could repay its debts to IMF any moment, and even companies could repay them. "Turkey has not feel any need to sign an agreement with the IMF even during the global crisis," Caglayan also said.
