The Association of Somali American Nationals (AFSAN) met with ATAA Past-President, Gunay Evinch and ATAA Programs Director, Secil Goksu, last Thursday at the ATAA Turkevi- shortly after the two tragic earthquakes in southeastern Turkey- to discuss ways to bring the Somali and Turkish communities together.

AFSAN leaders shared their deepest condolences for the tragic loss of many innocent lives during the PKK terrorist attacks and the back-to-back earthquakes in the southeastern region of Turkey. They also expressed their deep admiration and appreciation for Turkish efforts to relieve suffering in Somalia. ATAA also conveyed its concerns for the ongoing famine and tragedies in Somalia. The two organizations agreed to work closer during these trying times and to support each other in humanitarian efforts.

AFSAN and ATAA will jointly host a Somali-Turkish Friendship Dinner reception in the first week of December at a restaurant in Falls Church, Virginia. Somali Prime Minister’s spouse, Dr. Hodan Isse, and Turkish Ambassador to the U.S. Namik Tan will make welcoming remarks.
