Dylan Schwartz Message to Turkish American Community

To the Turkish-American resident community of Staten Island’s South Shore, my name is Dylan Schwartz and I am running to represent you on New York City Council.

If America is thought of as a “melting pot,” then New York City is the exemplar of that philosophy. Immigrants from all over the world have come here for almost three centuries seeking a better life for themselves and their loved ones. Our communities would know as well as anyone; after all, as a member of the Jewish faith, I am grateful that the Ottoman and Turkish people played the same role for our Jewish ancestors, welcoming them into its territories during the Spanish Inquisition and World War II. Today, more than ever, we must recommit ourselves to keeping the door open behind us and welcoming those who seek a better life here in America, like we once did. That is why I am fully in support of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, commonly known as DACA, a measure by President Obama protecting young immigrants that is now under threat by the current administration.

Our children here on Staten Island also face a different challenge: the opioid crisis. This health epidemic has taken many of our young ones at the hands of heroin, fentanyl, and prescription painkillers. Addiction is personal to me; my mother was an addict and I lost my brother to a drug overdose. I know how addiction can rip families apart, put a strain on finances, break trust, and each day much more difficult. That is why I am fighting for better treatment options, like medical marijuana, faster delivery of Narcan, a drug that saves the lives of overdose victims, and fighting addiction as a true disease instead of dehumanizing those who are suffering.

Dehumanization can take many ugly forms. Western society often dehumanizes Muslim-Americans, or truthfully, anyone with brown skin, regardless of how nonviolent and civil they are. These qualities sometimes attract hatred and injustice from the world around us from those who are uninformed about culture from other parts of the world. I promise as a Council Member that I will a) keep an open line of communication with the Turkish community of Staten Island, inclusive of members of all faiths, b) defend the civil liberties of all immigrant minorities in the face of adversity, and c) never ally myself with any group or organization that misrepresents the peaceful and hard-working intentions of Turkish-American citizens everywhere.

Now is the time for us to stand together and fight for the world we want to create. I swear to do that job in City Hall if you would honor me with your support on November 7th.

In solidarity,

Dylan Schwartz, Candidate for New York City Council, 51st District
