Turkish President Abdullah Gul said that Turkey had made great progress in its economic, political, military and cultural relations with Latin American countries. President Gul said at a joint news conference with President Oscar Arias of Costa Rica who is currently paying a state visit to Turkey, "President Arias is the first head of state visiting Turkey from a Central American country." "As part of its multi-dimensional and comprehensive foreign policy, Turkey has made great progress in its economic, political, military and cultural relations with Latin American countries. I had the chance of listening to problems of Latin America from President Arias. And, I informed him on developments in our region," he said. "Costa Rica is a democratic stable country which attaches importance to education, health and environment. It has a sound economy with increasing amount of foreign investments. We want to sign a free trade agreement with Costa Rica soon," he said. Prior to the meetings between Turkish and Costa Rican delegations, a memorandum of understanding was signed to establish a political consultation mechanism between foreign ministries of two countries.
